PEARL
A memorial to the late Janis Joplin

Started out as a Gibson 1985 Q-300 I bought on eBay in 2002. Mahogany body, fixed maple neck, ebony fingerboard. EMG active pickups, Kahler 2200 tremolo system bridge.

The design is a portrait of the Powerful Ms. Pearl framed in elaborate baroque filagree. A ribbon on the lower horn bears the word "Pearl" inlaid in mother of pearl. The tuning head carries a copy of R. Crumb's lady of leisure from Big Brother and the Holding Company's 1968 album, "Cheap Thrills".

The carving took more than 15 years. Hanging in my studio from 2002, she would come to the bench from time to time and finally completed in September 2018.
